On January 3, 2019, 127 women — a record number — were sworn in as members of the United States Congress; the “Squad” (four outspoken progressives), the first two Native American women, the first two Muslim women and women as young as 29 and as old as 85.

Author of The Firsts: The Inside Story of the Women Reshaping Congress, which chronicles the transition of the newly elected women from candidates to congresswomen, New York Times reporter Jennifer Steinhauer will take us inside their offices, into hearings, visits with constituents, conversations with colleagues and probe the question: Will the women change the culture of Washington, or will it change them?

During a 25-year reporting career at the New York Times, Steinhauer has reported from New York’s City Hall, Los Angeles and Capitol Hill. She is also the author of two cookbooks and a novel about the television business.
