ABOUT ABOUT

Joyce Carol Oates: Women on the Move

11:00 AM EST

Joyce Carol Oates, America’s most prolific and celebrated living author, published her first book at the age of 26, won the National Book Award when she was just 31 and — for her 58 novels and scores of plays, novellas, short stories, poetry and essays — won the National Humanities Medal, the Jerusalem Prize, two O. Henry Awards and has been a five-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Oates joins us to discuss her newly released volumes, The (Other) You: Stories, in which she ponders the alternate lives we might have led had we made different choices, and American Melancholy: Poems, which explores both the personal and the political, from memory and loss to the ravages of poverty, racism and social unrest. The (Other) You: Stories is available to purchase at registration.

NOTE: Books can only be shipped to US addresses.

Women on the Move: The Series

Family. Despair. Wrenching choices. The search for hope.

Four female authors chart these often-treacherous waters in new novels, short stories and poetry. Join us for revealing conversations about their explorations of these dilemmas and the challenges of being a writer today.

This series is moderated by Zibby Owens, creator of the popular podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, one of O: The Oprah Magazine’s favorite book podcasts.

Sponsored by The Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation Authors’ Series, honoring Theodore and Caroline Newhouse and Susan Newhouse.

All events in the series start at 11:00 AM EST
